Who is buried in Elizabeth Haight's grave?According to a Monument in the Sherman City Cemetery, Isabella Co., Elizabeth Haight died in 1918 and was buried in a cemetery plot owned by Leon Fay Haight. However, family members have photos taken about 1928 of someone who was reported to be Elizabeth Haight (according to the caption on the back of the photo). If this was indeed Elizabeth, who was buried in the cemetery plot at the Sherman City Cemetery? Who was Elizabeth? Elizabeth Armina Dodge, the daughter of Amos and Armina (Linson) Dodge, and was born about 1867 in Michigan. Elizabeth was the twin sister on Nancy Dodge. Sometime around 1888, Elizabeth married Leon Fay Haight. From census information we know that they had at least five children between 1889 to 1909. The question of who was buried in the cemetery plot in the Sherman City Cemetery has baffled us for a couple of years. Sexton records have been wrong before. But you would not think that a death date on a monument would be correct (unless it was entered years after the fact). The obvious conclusions were; the photos that were reported taken in 1928 were taken before 1918. The captions on the back of the photos, which indicated they were of Elizabeth Haight, were incorrect. The transcription on the monument was incorrect. Or there were two Elizabeth Haights… If Elizabeth did died in 1918, could Leon Haight have married again? And if so, could her name also have been Elizabeth? Updated information: I just received information from Michelle Schreiber, from Cedar Springs, MI. Michelle is a distant cousin and is a direct descendent of Leon and Elizabeth. According to Michelle, Elizabeth did die in 1918. And that Leon Haight married a second time to Edith Bert. It now appears that either the caption on the back of the photo was incorrect and should have been Edith or maybe Edith was also known as Elizabeth… Thank you Michelle for clearing up our mystery. Michelle has also provided other useful information
and documents on Leon Fay Haight. |
