My Research

Over the years I have been contacted by many individuals inquiring about their linkage to the Haight/Hoyt family. The vast majority of the time I have not been able to help or answer their questions. This is mainly due to the fact that I have only concerned my research into my direct family line. I would like to provide some information that I have concerning my current family research.

First I would like to say that I have not been able to confirm my linkage to Simon Hoyt. From information I have been able to obtain, Benjamin Haight, b. 1741 was the 2nd great-grandson of Simon Hoyt. Benjamin had 11 children, one of which was a William Haight, b. abt. 1785. I believe that this individual is my 4th Great-Grandfather.With that said, Benjamin's son William and my William Haight may not be the same individual.

From what I have documented, my 4th Great-Grandfather, William Haight was born about 1785 in Dutchess Co. New York. He married Sylvia sometime before 1809. According to the 1850 census, she was b. abt. 1789 in Saratoga Co., NY. At the time of her approx. birth year, Saratoga was part of Albany Co. NY. Saratoga did not become a county until 1791.

William and Sylvia had six children: Benjamin, David, Daniel, William, Lydia and Phebe Jane.

According to census information, William and Sylvia were in Washington Co., New York in 1808, where my 3rd Great-Grandfather, Benjamin L. Haight, was born.

The family then moved to the Ontario and Wayne Co., New York area, where Sylvia and children attended Monthly Meetings for the Society of Friends. William, her husband, was not listed in those records.

Benjamin L. met and married Ruth Lake before 1830, and lived in Farmington, Ontario Co. for a number of years. The families were last found in the 1855 New York State census. Sometime before 1860, Benjamin L. and family moved to Somerset Twp., in Hillsdale Co., Michigan, where he took up farming, and raised their 5 children.

William and Sylvia apparently did not come to Michigan with Benjamin to Michigan, or at least I have not been able to find any record of them after the 1855 New York census.

If you are related to one of William and Sylvia's children, I would love to hear from you.
